Detroit Police Department's Homicide Unit Installs Redact-It Electronic Redaction Software from Informative Graphics Corporation

Homicide Officers Use Technology to Modernize Operations and Protect Confidential Information

SCOTTSDALE, AZ and DETROIT, MI – December 15, 2011 Informative Graphics Corporation (IGC), a leader in viewing, redaction and publishing technology, announced today that the Detroit Police Department’s Homicide Unit selected Redact-It® electronic redaction software to redact police reports. Redact-It allows the Detroit Homicide officers to quickly search for privacy information in electronic police reports and completely remove that data before sharing the documents with outside parties like the media.

Before discovering Redact-It, the Detroit Homicide Unit had been redacting documents by hand with black wax pencils. Officers manually crossed out citizens' personal information from police reports, such as Social Security numbers, addresses, credit card numbers, phone numbers and dates of birth, then made a copy of the marked up document. This approach was time-consuming, tedious and not always accurate.

Homicide Investigator Dwight Pearson, who oversees special projects within the unit, realized they needed a more efficient, reliable and secure way to do redaction. Fortunately, a colleague told him about Redact-It, and after downloading the 15-day free trial, he realized he had found the right solution.

Pearson explains, “In the Homicide unit, people’s lives and reputations are often at stake, so there is no room for error in handling sensitive information. Redact-It software has completely modernized and streamlined the redaction process within our department.  We are not only saving time but are also serving the needs of Detroit citizens who trust us to protect them, and conduct our work quickly and diligently. I would highly recommend Redact-It to any law enforcement agency seeking a better way to redact.”

Christine Musil, Director of Marketing for IGC, comments, “Police departments and government agencies are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits that electronic redaction software provides. The technology can dramatically reduce the time taken to complete redaction tasks, while also securing the privacy of sensitive and privacy information.”
