Important Tips for Electronic Redaction
- Metadata. Many companies have been tripped up by unseen content, called metadata, in their documents. Redact-It does not transfer metadata to the final, redacted file so you don't have to worry about document revisions (like Track Changes), comments, time stamps, or any other revealing or embarrassing hidden text.
- Removed, not covered. Most companies that make headlines through improper redaction made the same redaction error. They thought covering the text with a drawing shape and converting the original document to PDF constituted redaction. It doesn't. Redact-It doesn't just cover redacted content, it removes it. No revealing applications, hacking or clever tricks can access the content because it simply isn't there.
- Logging is key. A good log provides a record of everything redacted, when and by whom. Redact-It keeps a detailed log of each document that provides a clear accountability trail and proves due diligence was performed.
- Verify. Always double-check redactions. If possible, re-read the document to make sure no misspellings and word variations were missed. Redact-It offers two methods of verification. The first steps reviewers through each redaction entity to verify all text is fully covered (important for scanned documents) and that no over-redaction occurred. The second is a focused view that helps reviewers scan through the document a few lines at a time to check for any missed content still needing redaction. There is no substitute for the human review.
